Leeds
Children's Theatre, formed back in 1935, celebrated its 70th Anniversary
last year. 2005 was a year of huge change for us, with the closure
of our home, the Leeds Civic Theatre on 7th May.
We, along with many other individuals and societies who used the
Civic Theatre, campaigned against this closure. The local council
agreed that this theatre based community was worth saving, and agreed
to provide alternative accommodation.
The new venue, The Carriageworks, is quite bit
smaller than the Civic Theatre [350 seats, rather than 520+], but
offers our members and audiences a modern, accessible venue.
Leeds Children's Theatre's PETER PAN was the last ever performance
staged at the Leeds Civic Theatre, and our show THE IDEAL GNOME
EXPEDITION was the first main production at the newly opened Carriageworks
theatre in November 2005.
We
are settling into our new home, and look forward to welcoming friends,
old and new.
Sadly two of our oldest supporters and longstanding members, Edna
Barwell and Bill Fawcett, both passed away in 2005 and never got
a chance to see the Carriageworks theatre completed. At the theatre's
official opening, by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, in May 2006, two memorial
plaques were revealed, in memory of Edna and Bill.
The
Leeds Civic Arts Guild website
has information of all Guild activities, and the Carriageworks theatre
also has its own website.
